Mass flow rate

Mass flow rate is the movement of mass per time. Its unit is mass divided by time, so kilogram per second in SI units, and slug per second or pound per second in US customary units.

The mass flow is defined as amount of mass passing in defined time:

\dot m = \frac{dm}{dt}

Mass flow rate can be calculated from the density of the liquid (or gas), its velocity, and the cross sectional area of flow.

{\dot m} = {\rho \cdot v\cdot A}

where:

{\dot m} = mass flow rate
ρ = density
v = velocity
A = flow area

The mass flow rate can also be calculated by multiplying the volume flow rate by the density.

{\dot m} = {\rho \cdot Q}

where:

ρ = density
Q = volume flow rate
